De Magia Veterum is an avante-garde one man black metal project fronted by Dutch multi-instrumentalist Mories. Mories may be most well known for his other projects Gnaw Their Tongues and Aderlating, both also one man escapades into hellish noise. While avant-black-metal may be the easiest genre tag to ascribe to projects such as De Magia Veterum, it surely does not do the project justice. From the jump every track is a blistering onslaught of relentless noisy drone, pummeling drums and hellish wretched vocals that could soundtrack your fast decent to hell. And while upon first listen you may be inclined to ask yourself ‘What in the holy fuck is this?’ any amount of time spent with any of Mories’ projects will reveal deep complexities and song structures that are very interesting, to say the least. Among the hellish chaos there is something quite soothing within the full blown assault of tracks that make up De Magia Veterum’s catalog; a sort of beauty behind the madness… Less noise and drone oriented than Mories’ other endeavors, De Magia Veterum is definitely the most blistering guitar-heavy project, and posibly the most accesible. If you can even consider any of his projects ‘accesible’. I’m not going to say you are going to like this, I’m not even going to tell you to give it a chance if you don’t like the first 10 seconds, because all of De Magia Veterum’s tracks are relentless walls of attacking beautiful noise. If you don’t get sucked in immediately, this project is most likely not for you. If you do happen to get sucked in like I did, be sure to check out the Gnaw Their Tongues BandCamp, as it loaded with hours upon hours of this beautiful beautiful music.
